BC Heat Pump Rebates in 2026: What Coquitlam Homeowners Can Still Get
Published 2026-10-07 · Updated 2026-10-07 · By the RatedHomeContractor editorial team
BC heat pump rebates changed a lot in 2026. Some offers were cut in July, and a BC Hydro bonus ends on October 31. Many older articles still show amounts that no longer apply. This guide sets out what a Coquitlam homeowner can still get, based on the official program pages as we read them on October 7, 2026. Programs change often, so check the official page before you sign a contract.
Which heat pump rebates can I get in Coquitlam?
It depends on how your home is heated now and on your household income.
- Heated with electricity (baseboards, an electric furnace, radiant heat): you can apply for BC Hydro's Home Renovation Rebate at any income. If your income qualifies, you may get more through the CleanBC Energy Savings Program.
- Heated with natural gas or propane: outside northern BC, the provincial heat pump rebate for switching from gas is now only offered through the income-qualified Energy Savings Program.
- Lower or median income: you may qualify for free upgrades through the Energy Conservation Assistance Program, which is supported by the federal Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program.

BC Hydro heat pump rebate for electrically heated homes
BC Hydro's Home Renovation Rebate pays $4,000 for a whole home heat pump and $1,500 for a partial home system. The heat pump must replace a primary all-electric heating system, such as baseboards or an electric furnace. Replacing an existing heat pump does not qualify.
Main requirements
- The installer must be a member of the Home Performance Contractor Network (HPCN). Self-installs are not eligible.
- The unit needs a variable-speed compressor and must meet SEER 16 and HSPF 10, or SEER2 15.2 and HSPF2 8.5 (Region IV). It must be on the rebate-eligible heat pump list.
- Whole home systems must be sized to meet 100% of the home's heating needs at –5°C without electric backup heat. The contractor must complete a CSA F280-12 heat load calculation.
- Partial home systems must meet at least 50% of the home's heating needs.
- Homes over 1,200 sq. ft. must install a multi-split or central system.
- Emergency replacement of a broken electric heating system is not eligible under this program.
- You apply online within six months of the invoice date, with a paid-in-full invoice.
The bonus ending October 31, 2026
BC Hydro is offering up to $1,000 in bonus rebates for switching from electric heat to an air source heat pump. The heat pump must be installed and invoiced between August 1 and October 31, 2026. The promotion runs until November 30, 2026, or until the bonus funding runs out, whichever comes first. If you are counting on this bonus, confirm with BC Hydro and your contractor that your job will be finished and invoiced in time.
Other BC Hydro bonuses
The program also offers a $300 Two Upgrade Bonus, or a Home Energy Improvement Bonus of $750 to $2,000 if you do at least three upgrades with before-and-after EnerGuide evaluations. You can get only one of these per home.
CleanBC income-qualified rebates after July 6, 2026
The CleanBC Better Homes Energy Savings Program is for households under set income limits. On July 6, 2026, the program cut heat pump rebates for homes heated with oil, propane or natural gas at every income level. It also ended electric-to-heat-pump rebates at Income Level 2.
What changed
Comparing the June 1, 2026 requirements with the current ones, for homes switching from natural gas or propane:
- Central ducted or 3-head systems: Level 1 went from $16,000 to $13,000, Level 2 from $12,000 to $7,000, and Level 3 from $10,500 to $3,500.
- Single-head mini-splits: Level 1 went from $7,500 to $5,500, Level 2 from $5,500 to $4,500, and Level 3 from $4,000 to $1,000.
- Electric to heat pump at Level 2 ($4,000 before) is no longer listed. Level 1 stays at $5,000.
Income limits also went up. For example, the Level 1 limit for a one-person household was $47,007 and is now $51,100. A grace period covered installs from July 6 to 31, 2026, but only where the contractor had sent in a quote by July 5. That window has closed.
Who qualifies
- Income limits depend on household size. For a one-person household, the maximum combined pre-tax income is $51,100 for Level 1, $63,900 for Level 2 and $102,100 for Level 3. For four people, the limits are $94,900, $118,600 and $189,800.
- Level 3 rebates are only for ground-oriented homes switching from natural gas, propane or oil.
- Your home's BC Assessment value must be at or under $1,200,000 for Levels 1 and 2, or $1,820,000 for Level 3, if you register on or after April 1, 2026.
- The home must be your year-round primary residence and at least 12 months old.
- When switching from gas, the old gas heating system and related equipment must be removed. A gas fireplace can stay if it is only a secondary heat source.
How to apply
You pre-register on the Energy Savings Program portal and send income documents, such as your CRA Notice of Assessment. If you are approved, you get an eligibility code. Codes issued for applications received on or after July 6, 2026 are valid for upgrades completed within three months. Then you get quotes from Energy Savings Program registered contractors. The contractor deducts the rebate on your invoice and claims it from the program, so you pay the rest.
Does FortisBC offer a dual fuel or heat pump rebate?
We could not confirm FortisBC's current residential dual fuel rebate (a heat pump paired with a gas furnace). On October 7, 2026, the FortisBC pages we tried returned "not found" or showed no rebate details, so we have left out FortisBC amounts. Check FortisBC's rebates and offers page or call FortisBC before you plan around one.
Two related facts we could confirm on the CleanBC pages:
- The Energy Savings Program's dual fuel rebate is only for homes heated by Pacific Northern Gas natural gas or tanked propane. It does not cover FortisBC natural gas customers.
- The Home Renovation Rebate Program's dual fuel rebate is only for homes in northern BC, in or north of the District of 100 Mile House.
Federal programs available in BC
- Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program: Natural Resources Canada says this program covers the full cost of recommended retrofits, such as insulation and heat pumps, for eligible low-to-median-income homeowners and tenants. A June 29, 2026 federal news release announced it for BC, delivered by BC Hydro and FortisBC. For BC Hydro customers, the entry point is the Energy Conservation Assistance Program. It offers a free home energy evaluation and free installation of recommended upgrades, which can include heat pumps. Its income limits match the Level 1 limits above, for example $51,100 for one person.
- Canada Greener Homes Grant: closed. December 31, 2025 was the last day to submit documents.
- Canada Greener Homes Loan: closed. Natural Resources Canada says no further applications can be approved.
Does the City of Coquitlam add a top-up?
The City of Coquitlam offered heat pump top-ups in past years. On October 7, 2026, the City's energy upgrades page did not list a current heat pump top-up. It sent residents to CleanBC and BC Hydro instead. If a new City offer opens, it should appear on coquitlam.ca/energyupgrades.
Can I stack heat pump rebates?
- BC Hydro Home Renovation Rebate and Energy Savings Program: you cannot combine them. Pick the one that pays more for your situation.
- One heating system rebate per home: under the Energy Savings Program rules, you can receive only one rebate payment for a primary heating system across a list of programs. That list includes BC Hydro's Home Renovation Rebate and FortisBC's dual fuel and income-qualified programs.
- No more than the cost: rebates cannot be more than the invoiced and paid cost of the upgrade.
- Add-ons: the Energy Savings Program can add electrical service upgrade, ventilation, and health and safety rebates when they go with an eligible heat pump.
Why the contractor you choose matters
BC Hydro says an HPCN member is required to get a heat pump rebate. The Energy Savings Program requires its own registered contractor who is approved to install heat pumps. Self-installs do not qualify for either program. Ask any contractor which program lists them, and check the HPCN directory or the Better Homes contractor search yourself.
If your project means removing or changing gas equipment, such as taking out a gas furnace, the gas work must be done by a contractor licensed by Technical Safety BC, under a permit. Never attempt gas work yourself. Our guide on how to check a gas fitter licence in BC shows how to look this up.

FAQ
Is the $6,000 BC heat pump rebate still available?
Not for Coquitlam. The Home Renovation Rebate Program's $6,000 heat pump rebate for switching from fossil fuel only applies to homes in northern BC. For electric-heated homes, BC Hydro's maximum is $4,000, plus the bonus of up to $1,000 until October 31, 2026.
I heat with gas and I am not income-qualified. Is there any rebate?
The provincial programs we checked do not list a gas-to-heat-pump rebate for non-income-qualified homes in the Lower Mainland. We could not confirm current FortisBC offers, so check with FortisBC directly.
Do I apply, or does my contractor?
For BC Hydro's Home Renovation Rebate, you apply online within six months of the invoice date. For the Energy Savings Program, you pre-register first. Your registered contractor then takes the rebate off your invoice and submits the claim within six months.
Can I install a heat pump myself and still get a rebate?
No. Both programs say self-installations are not eligible.
Before you hire
- Check the official program page on the day you sign. Write down the date and the rebate amount.
- Confirm the contractor is an HPCN member (BC Hydro rebate) or an Energy Savings Program registered contractor (income-qualified rebate).
- For income-qualified rebates, get your eligibility code before any work starts.
- Ask for a CSA F280-12 heat load calculation and the model's listing on the qualified heat pump list.
- If gas equipment is involved, check the contractor's Technical Safety BC licence and ask who pulls the gas permit.
- Get at least two written quotes. Prices vary by home and contractor.
- If you want the BC Hydro bonus, get the October 31, 2026 install-and-invoice date in writing.
